Periodic inspections

Labour protection laws are mandatory

Electrical equipment must be safe. This lies within the responsibility of the employer. Hidden or apparent equipment defects pose a risk to employees and unfortunately lead to accidents over and over again.

For this reason, the German labour protection law calls for regular tests. “Periodic inspections” are supposed to ensure that electrical equipment is in good order and condition.

Periodic inspection of safety devices

Safety devices must work reliably all the time. Therefore, the German Accident Prevention Regulation “Electrical Systems and Equipment” (DGUV) specifies test intervals for voltage detectors, phase comparators and voltage detecting systems.

Employers are responsible for maintenance, adherence of test intervals and carrying out the tests!

Notes on test intervals for protective and auxiliary equipment: DGUV regulation 3 (previously BGV A3), section 5 – Table 1C: Test for compliance with the limit values specified in the electrotechnical rules at least after 6 years.
 

Regular tests in the DEHN service centre

Have your voltage detectors be tested in our high-voltage test laboratories at regular intervals. The test will be documented on the device and in a separate test report.

BG ETEM

The German Professional Association BG ETEM (German trade association for energy, textiles, electrical goods and media products) says:

Earthing and short-circuiting devices according to IEC 61230:2008 are safety devices and are subject to the requirements of regular periodic inspections.

Experiences by the German Professional Association show that untested faulty earthing and short-circuiting devices are a high safety risk. According to BG A3, section 5 and DIN VDE 0105-100:2009 tests are required to ensure safe work on electrical installations.

Non-destructive testing

Hidden damage frequently occurs which cannot be found by visual inspection alone. While previously the stranded wires used to be cut for testing, earthing and short-circuiting devices are now tested non-destructively.

The new measurement procedure was developed on behalf of the BG ETEM at the Dresden University of Technology and Economics. The ohmic resistance of the earthing and short-circuiting device is statically AND dynamically (i.e. when bending the cable) determined.

Your benefit: This procedure provides more detailed information on the overall condition of the device.

Testing of portable earthing and short-circuiting devices

Portable earthing and short-circuiting devices are tested in three steps:

  1. Visual inspection
    Visual inspection for apparent defects
  2. Static test
    Measurement of the total resistance on the stationary earthing and short-circuiting device
  3. Dynamic test
    Measurement of the relative change in resistance in the cable and on the connection points of the bent earthing and short-circuiting device.

Q: How do I have to pack the devices?
A: The devices have to be safely packed for transport. Due to insurance policy reasons, we use a special packaging for returning the devices. Please let us know if we should return your own packaging.


Q: Do I have to request a return number?
A: No – A return number is not required for maintenance tests.


Q: How long does the test take?
A: In general, the test takes about 5 - 6 working weeks.


Q: According to which criteria is the test performed?
A: The test is performed according to DGUV regulation 3 (previously BGV A3).


Q: How is the test documented?
A: You will receive a test report for all tests and the device is labelled.
